My nephew has this very cute post-dinner habit of saying, “favourite. dessert” repeatedly until ice cream with chocolate sauce arrives on his plastic dining tray. Sometimes I know how he feels.

This weekend my favourite dessert came Sunday. After dropping a birthday present of magnolia branches off at my friend Kari’s house, Ash and I hiked around the beach at Cate’s Park and then settled onto the sunny patio at Arm’s Reach Bistro in Deep Cove.  With gloves, scarves and a wet dog (but no jackets), we felt sun on our faces , read books and watched a live “man-on-a-wire” demonstration in the park. 

I had: potato and leek pottage with crispy pancetta and white truffle oil.

He had: Bistro salad with seared sirloin, red grapes, pine nuts and balsamic magic.

We had: a nice time. Highly recommended day or night, but especially on the patio, whatever the weather.

The view from Seymour Mountain in Vancouver. This was in July. Within 30 minutes of leaving the snowy parking lot, we were laying on the beach in Deep Cove. I woke up with this day on my mind. I am so glad we took pictures.

Having always wanted to be a gypsy myself, I gave one to my fiance for his 30th birthday.

Given that all Greek restaurants have the same exact menu, it’s hard to imagine that one place could be so above the others in terms of food quality. But if you’re a Vancouver-based reader, please believe me, Pasparos in North Vancouver really is the best. The whole scene is just so Santorini-esque. Not to mention the tray of ouzo that greeted us when we arrived (special ordered by moi). What, you’ve never heard of welcome shots?

There was some argument whether or not its appropriate to offer five dollar bills to a belly-dancer while she’s dancing. I always thought that’s what they wanted. How else are you supposed to tip them? In the end, we sent a side plate around to thank her for her masterful entrancement of Ashleah. He was charmed like a snake. And squirmed like one too.

Anyhow, as we said all night long…
